Growth Inside the Chaos

Transition is rarely clean. In both life and business, periods of change often create uncertainty, operational friction, and competing priorities. But inside every messy situations are opportunities to create clarity, momentum, and growth — if you approach them with discipline.

Here are three principles that have helped me navigate complex transitions and identify practical opportunities inside chaotic environments.

#1 - Stay in your Lane

Even the most chaotic situations contain elements of opportunity if you stay in your lane and you're willing to look for them. One of the biggest mistakes during a period of transition is to become fixated on problems outside your area of expertise that you're not equipped or tasked to solve. Don't be tempted to wander outside your lane. You are in the position you are in because you are smart and your expertise lends itself to solving a particular set of problems. If you want to thrive in a time of transition operate from a position of strength and solve the issues that are within your grasp.

#2 - Focus on the Smalls

When faced with a messy situation, it's easy to become overwhelmed by numerous and complex problems. If you want to thrive in a period of transition make a small list of 2-3 solvable problems (within your lane...see #1) and focus on those. By shifting your perspective, you can uncover hidden opportunities that may not have been immediately apparent if you are willing focus on the small solvable problems and see them through until they have solution.

#3 - The Discipline of Why

The most successful people I know are voracious about acquiring knowledge. In turbulent times, knowledge is key to getting things on the right path and solving problems. When you start to Focus on your Smalls (See #2), recognize that the path to success is rarely linear and that detours and setbacks are simply part of the journey. By continuing to answer the question of 'Why' you begin to acquire information and start the process of filling in the gaps in your knowledge. You'll be amazed at the practical solutions begin to emerge if you will be disciplined and keep asking why.
